1930 Model A Ford Sport Coupe Vintage Hot Rod Project

1929 Model A Ford Sport Coupe Vintage Hot Rod project.

I purchased this Model A Sport Coupe about 5 years ago. It has been kept in safe-keeping at the Man Cave but set aside until now. Sorry to say, other projects and personal life got preference for one reason or another. We all know how “ other things” interrupt our quality Model A time.

This Sport Coupe was restored about 10 years before I bought it locally. The black repaint is great and has a pin stripe in a off white color. Most importantly the frame itself, and chassis parts, and body show no rust spots or paint bubbles. I believe my investment was a good one because we all realize what body work and paint costs are these days. I did go down that renovation rabbit hole once before so “been there, done that” sums up my thinking.

But yes, the but word, the tan top had faded and had large mold spots from its long storage with the previous owner. It had to be removed. The interior material and rumble seat were still in great shape but I have a new look in mind. The 1929 Sport Coupe is going to be a 1929 Ford Vintage Hot Rod as it would have been built in the day. The Model A Ford purists are screaming out loud already. I also have the passion for restoring back to original. This build will be with a differently slant.

The interior has been removed. The roof panels and hundreds of staples have been removed. We are now down to basic wood and metal for the top and interior. The radiator is off, all electric wires, headlights, engine and transmission bolts are out. We are ready to remove the engine and transmission in one pull.

Next, we will disassemble the engine and send it out for a cleaning, boring, crank balancing, oil system rework, and the flywheel lightened. The plan is to rebuild the 4-banger engine hot rod style. Also, the standard 3 speed transmission will be sent out to have it gone over and made into an easier to drive modern synchro meshed transmission.

Please check in with us next month to see what we have accomplished.
